Did you know that...

  • MS is a motor ship and DS is a steamship ?

  • MS Brekke was named in 2017. Previously, it has had the names MS Strømsfoss, MS Turisten and Wappen von Maasholm .

  • When the boat was built in Germany in 1965 it was called Wappen von Maasholm? Completed at the shipyard Carl Heidelmann Schiffswerft. It was built as a passenger boat and sailed on the Rhine in Germany.

  • The boat arrived in Halden in 1985 and was named MS Turisten? DS Turisten operated as a freight and passenger ship from 1887. It was sunk in 1967 when the then owner NSB "no longer needed it". Passenger boats in the Halden Canal were in short supply, and a suitable boat was for sale in Germany. The Halden Canal's "new" Turisten was in operation from 1985.

  • The boat drove under its own power across the Kattegat? It grounded at Halmstad, and the trip from there took 30 hours.

  • Rolf Olaussen Hesse was the driving force behind the purchase of the boat? On the team were Odd Berg, and captain Tor Pettersen. Odd Berg operated the boat.

  • It was a "May 17th atmosphere" the night MS Turisten was driven from Halden harbor to Tillikor in Tistedal? The boat was lifted on a crane from Kynningsrud, onto a truck and transported to Tistedal via Øberg. On the way there were some large trees that were in the way, and then Odd Berg and Rolf Hesse grabbed a chainsaw and climbed onto the boat, cutting the branches along the way.

  • Does the boat fit just right in the Halden Canal? The measurements indicated that the boat should just fit in the locks and narrow waters like the Stenselva and Tordivelen. Rolf and co still had to go down to Germany and check the measurements before they drove "home" to the Halden Canal.

  • In 2017, the boat was named MS Brekke? It has since been called MS Strømsfoss. The names are after their home ports. MS Brekke was named when the Myhren family bought the boat in 2017 and changed its home port to Tistedal in Halden.

  • The boat has been running regularly for 40 years on the Halden Canal?

  • The DS Turisten was raised after 30 years at a depth of 20 meters in Femsjøen? In 1997, some committed souls from Aremark decided to raise the DS Turisten and refurbish it to the 1927 version as a passenger ship. It was the owners Tore Aksel Voldberg and Alf Ulven who ensured that the boat was raised. It was back in service in 2009.

  • MS Turisten was then named MS Strømsfoss? Two boats cannot have the same name, so it was the oldest boat that was allowed to keep the name. MS Strømsfoss then had its home port in Strømsfoss.
